Kidney Stones: Thinking sudden back pain is normal? Could it be kidney stones?

Pain Radiating To Groin: Kidney stones are one such condition that can appear without any warning, and the pain is so severe that it becomes difficult to understand.

What are the early symptoms of kidney stones?

What Causes Sudden Lower Back Pain: Sudden, sharp pain in the lower back may seem common. People often dismiss it as a result of prolonged sitting, poor sleeping posture, or a minor sprain. However, it's not always muscle-related. Sometimes, it's a signal from the body that something more serious is going on, especially a kidney problem. Let's find out what experts say.

What do experts say?

Kidney stones are one such condition that can appear without warning, and the pain can be so intense that it's difficult to understand. Dr. Ankur Bhatnagar told TOI that sudden back pain often indicates kidney or urinary tract stones. This pain doesn't remain localized; it can spread from the back to the abdomen or thigh, which is its most significant symptom.

Dr. Ritesh Monga also explains that this pain often starts at the side of the waist and gradually moves downward. This is why it's often mistaken for general back pain, whereas muscle pain usually remains localized.

What is the problem?

In fact, when a stone passes out of the kidney and gets stuck in the urinary tract, the flow of urine is blocked. This increases pressure in the kidney and causes intense pain. This pain comes and goes in waves, sometimes very intense and sometimes mild. According to Dr. Monga, the size of the stone doesn't always determine the intensity of the pain.

These are the signs

Other symptoms may also appear, such as vomiting, burning during urination, frequent urge to urinate, and sometimes blood in the urine. Many people ignore these symptoms and manage with painkillers. Dr. Bhatnagar warns that taking excessive painkillers without consulting a doctor can cause permanent kidney damage.

This problem is becoming more common these days, especially among urban dwellers. Insufficient water intake, excessive salt or sugar intake, and diseases like obesity and diabetes increase the risk. Dehydration is also a major cause in a hot country like India, where the body receives less water than it needs.

Easier to treat than before

The good news is that its treatment is now much easier than before. Dr. Bhatnagar explains that modern techniques can now treat stones without incisions. Dr. Monga adds that in many cases, laser technology can also remove stones without cutting. However, timely attention is crucial. If the pain is sudden, sharp, or shifting, don't ignore it. Timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent it from becoming a major problem.
