If you haven't filed your income tax return yet, there's some relief for some taxpayers. The government has extended the ITR filing deadline for certain categories of taxpayers this year from July 31 to August 31, 2026. Some individuals will now receive an additional month. This relief will not apply to all taxpayers.
Who got the extension?
Under the new system, taxpayers with income from business or profession that is not subject to a tax audit can now file their ITR until August 31, 2026. This primarily includes eligible taxpayers filing ITR-3 and ITR-4.
What is the deadline for salaried individuals?
If you are employed and file ITR-1 or ITR-2, there are no changes for you. Such taxpayers must file their returns by July 31, 2026. Filing returns after that date may incur late fees and other regulations.
