The impact of the war on the supply of LPG

Commercial LPG Crisis In India: The effects of rising tensions in the Middle East are now being felt in India. While the government has vowed to ensure oil and gas supplies amid the ongoing war with Iran, the shortage of LPG in many parts of the country is causing significant hardship. According to the hospitality body AHAR (Indian Hotel and Restaurant Association), approximately 20 percent of restaurants in the financial capital, Mumbai, have closed due to the reduced supply of LPG cylinders.

The organization says that if this situation continues, up to 50 percent of food and beverage outlets could close in the next two to three days. Restaurant owners say they have been facing significant difficulties obtaining commercial LPG cylinders for the past two days.

Iran war worsens shortages

Similar problems are being faced in cities like Bengaluru and Chennai. The organization says that if gas supplies don't return to normal soon, the situation could become dire here as well. Hotel owners in Bengaluru have indicated that they may have to temporarily shut down their operations if commercial LPG supplies are disrupted, as their operations are entirely dependent on LPG.

The situation regarding LPG supply in Chandigarh is also worsening. A large number of commercial gas cylinders are piled up in the Indane Gas Agency warehouse. According to employees, there has been a lack of regular supply of commercial cylinders for the past four days, resulting in the limited cylinders that are arriving being stored in the warehouse.

According to Sonu, a warehouse employee, hotel and restaurant owners are constantly inquiring about cylinders, but they are currently unavailable. Furthermore, domestic gas supplies have been affected, and employees report that domestic LPG supplies have been reduced by nearly half. This situation has increased the anxiety of hotel, restaurant, and food service providers in the city, as their operations depend entirely on the availability of gas cylinders.

Long queues outside the warehouse

The impact of the gas shortage amid the Iran-related war is becoming evident in Bhopal. The disruption of commercial LPG cylinder supplies and the mandatory 25-day gap between domestic cylinder bookings has exacerbated the public's hardship. Long queues have formed outside gas agency warehouses, leaving many worried about the availability of cylinders.

Ordinary consumers say that while the government is talking about normalcy, cylinders are still unavailable on the ground, and the supply of commercial cylinders has been abruptly halted. They also allege that some gas agencies are taking advantage of the current situation, citing a shortage of cylinders and forcing consumers to wait. This has created confusion and concern about gas supply in the city.

Government in action

Meanwhile, the central government is monitoring the situation and taking steps to ensure adequate oil and gas availability. The government has directed oil refineries to increase LPG production to avoid any supply shortages. Currently, the government's priority is to maintain domestic LPG availability.

According to government officials, this move is aimed at preventing disruptions to essential services such as restaurants, hospitals, and the food supply chain. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has indicated that the war with Iran may end soon. Furthermore, the G7 countries have decided to use their strategic oil reserves. Following these announcements, crude oil prices have seen some moderation in the global market
