The Union Health Ministry has directed the Indian Premier League (IPL) to prohibit all forms of tobacco and alcohol advertising, including surrogate promotions, ahead of IPL 2025, which begins on March 22.
Health Ministry’s Directive
In a letter addressed to IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, Director General of Health Services Atul Goel emphasized the importance of enforcing strict regulations to prevent tobacco and alcohol promotions. The letter urges IPL to:
- Ban all direct and indirect advertisements for tobacco and alcohol during matches, in stadiums, and on television broadcasts.
- Prohibit the sale of tobacco and alcohol at IPL venues and affiliated sports facilities.
- Discourage cricketers, commentators, and other sports personalities from endorsing products related to tobacco or alcohol.
Health Risks & Social Responsibility
Goel highlighted the severe health crisis caused by tobacco and alcohol consumption, stating:
"India ranks second in tobacco-related deaths worldwide, with nearly 14 lakh annual deaths. Alcohol is also the most common psychoactive substance used by Indians. Non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular issues, cancer, diabetes, and hypertension account for over 70% of deaths in India."
He further urged IPL players to recognize their social and moral obligation as role models, promoting healthy and active lifestyles instead of products that harm public health.
IPL 2025 Updates
- The opening ceremony and final will be held in Kolkata, as Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions.
- In the IPL 2025 auction, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive buy, joining Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer was signed by Punjab Kings for ₹26.75 crore.
This move marks a significant step towards making sports a healthier and more responsible platform for young fans and players alike.
