Punjab Kings may have walked away with a win against Chennai Super Kings, but for Glenn Maxwell, the celebration came with a sting. The Aussie all-rounder has been fined 25% of his match fee and handed a demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the high-voltage encounter.
What Did Maxwell Do Wrong?
While the IPL has not revealed the exact details of Maxwell’s offense, the league confirmed that he was found guilty of a Level 1 offense under the IPL Code of Conduct. Such violations typically include dissent, inappropriate physical contact, or unsportsmanlike behavior.
Maxwell accepted his mistake and admitted guilt before the match referee, avoiding any formal hearing. According to IPL rules, the match referee’s decision is final in Level 1 offenses.
Not the First This Season
Maxwell joins a growing list of players penalized for similar offenses in IPL 2025:
- Digvesh Rathi (LSG) has already been fined twice — first 25%, then 50% of his match fee.
- Ishant Sharma was also fined 25% of his match fee for a Level 1 breach.
The increasing number of infractions is raising eyebrows about player behavior and discipline this season.
Maxwell’s On-Field Performance vs CSK
Maxwell didn’t leave a big mark with the bat — scoring just 1 run off 2 balls before falling to Ravichandran Ashwin.
With the ball, however, he made a key breakthrough by dismissing Rachin Ravindra, CSK’s in-form opener who was threatening to take the game away.
Will This Impact Maxwell’s Future Matches?
While one demerit point doesn’t lead to suspension, accumulating multiple points could result in bans in future matches. Maxwell and PBKS will be cautious moving forward, especially as they look to solidify their playoff hopes.
