Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla Begins 14-Day Space Journey with Axiom-4 Mission
In a historic leap for India’s space ambitions, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force has successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. Part of the international Axiom-4 mission, Shukla is set to spend 14 days in orbit, participating in various scientific and research activities aboard the ISS.
The Axiom-4 mission launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying four astronauts from different countries, including India. The mission marks a significant step forward in international collaboration for space exploration and underscores India's growing presence in global space initiatives.
A New Chapter in India's Space Journey
Shubhanshu Shukla’s presence aboard the ISS is being hailed as a proud moment for India. He becomes one of the few Indian astronauts to have traveled beyond Earth's atmosphere, following in the footsteps of Squadron Leader Rakesh Sharma, who became the first Indian in space in 1984. After 41 years, Shukla’s journey brings back the tricolor to space.
In a heartwarming video message recorded from orbit, Shukla greeted the nation with a cheerful “Namaste from space!” He expressed his awe and excitement, sharing that he felt like a child learning to walk and eat in microgravity. He humorously noted that he was sleeping more than usual, an expected side-effect of adapting to zero gravity. “This might be a small step personally, but it's a firm and steady stride in the direction of India’s human spaceflight program,” he said.
Official Support and National Pride
The Indian Air Force officially acknowledged Shukla’s mission, calling it a “historic journey.” In a statement, the IAF said, “Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is undertaking a monumental mission. Forty-one years after Rakesh Sharma waved the Indian flag from space, this moment renews our legacy.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also took to social media to express his pride and support. “This mission is more than just a spaceflight. It’s a milestone for India and a moment of pride for our entire nation. Four astronauts from four different countries are part of this mission, and we are immensely proud that one of them is representing India,” he posted. He extended his best wishes to Shukla and his international teammates.
What is the Axiom-4 Mission?
The Axiom-4 mission is a privately funded spaceflight organized by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX. It aims to expand the boundaries of commercial space travel and research. The Dragon spacecraft, developed by SpaceX, is designed for human spaceflight and is known for its safety and reusability features.
The astronauts onboard the ISS will engage in experiments related to life sciences, technology, sustainability, and microgravity research. These findings will contribute not only to science but also to future space missions, including potential lunar and Mars expeditions.
India's Growing Role in Global Space Exploration
Shubhanshu Shukla’s participation in Axiom-4 is symbolic of India’s rising stature in the global space community. It also comes at a time when the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is actively preparing for the Gaganyaan mission, India’s first indigenous human spaceflight program.
While Gaganyaan is still in development, international missions like Axiom-4 offer Indian astronauts real-time experience in space conditions, operations, and collaboration with global space agencies.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s journey to the ISS marks a moment of immense pride for India. As he spends the next two weeks contributing to critical space research, the mission sets a precedent for future Indian astronauts and space missions. With support from both government and the public, India’s aspirations in space continue to soar to new heights.
