6G rollout in India

In the world of mobile networks, preparations are now accelerating for the next generation of connectivity, 6G, after 5G. In the future, its use may not be limited to fast internet, but it could also play an essential role in AI, online healthcare, education, and real-time digital services.

In this direction, Reliance Jio has unveiled its plans for 6G in India. At the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026, the company stated that India could be among the first countries to launch commercial 6G services once global standards are established. The company also demonstrated the technology behind its new network.

How much more capacity will 6G provide than 5G?

According to Jio, 6G networks can provide up to five times more capacity than existing 5G networks. The company also claims that network latency can be reduced by up to 10 times. Lower latency means the network will be able to respond faster to commands or requests.

This type of connectivity could enable AI services to operate in real time. Furthermore, more bandwidth could be available for holographic video, healthcare, education, and other digital services. However, the commercial launch of 6G requires finalization of global standards, which is targeted for around 2030.

Jio showcased Giga MIMO Radio technology.

At IMC 2026, Jio unveiled its Giga MIMO Radio. The company claims it is India's first Giga MIMO Radio. It also showcased a common baseband unit that can support both 5G and 6G networks. Jio stated that it has filed over 8,000 patents, hundreds of which are related to 6G. According to the company, it has also made over 934 contributions to the development of global network standards.

How will farmers, doctors and students get help?

Jio believes that faster connectivity and lower latency will enable faster response times for AI-based services. The company also demonstrated potential uses for farmers, doctors, and students. It is also working on AI-native and quantum-safe networks, which aim to improve network capacity and security.

Preparations for satellite connectivity are also underway.

Jio also unveiled its Sovereign Satellite Connectivity plan at IMC 2026. Under this plan, the company plans a network of approximately 1,600 low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and 23 ground stations across the country. This initiative is part of the company's preparations for next-generation connectivity.
