India has taken such a decision that America is no longer able to do anything, know what is the whole matter is?
India-US Trade Deal: The US may believe it has taught India a lesson by imposing tariffs, but the reality is that India has put the US in a tight spot. India has imposed a 30 percent tariff on pulses imported from the US. Now, two US senators have appealed to President Donald Trump to lift this 30 percent tariff.
Senators appeal to Trump
According to a report by news agency PTI, in a letter to Trump on January 16th, Republican Senators Steve Daines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota urged Trump to reduce the 30 percent duty imposed by India on American pulses. Since India is the world's largest consumer of pulses, accounting for approximately 27 percent of global consumption, India's tariffs on American pulses are harming its farmers. These tariffs have also led to a decline in pulse and pea exports to India.
PM Modi was also mentioned in the letter.
In their letter to Trump, the senators stated that lentils, chickpeas, dried beans, and peas are among the most widely consumed pulses in India, but India has imposed heavy tariffs on US exports in these categories. Consequently, high-quality products grown here face a competitive disadvantage when exported to India. Daines and Kramer stated that discussing tariffs on pulse crops with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries would be mutually beneficial for both US producers and Indian consumers.
When will the trade deal between India and America be finalized?
Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal said in New Delhi on Thursday that India and the United States are very close to completing a bilateral trade agreement, and that negotiating teams are working on almost all remaining issues. He said a formal announcement will be made once both sides agree on the right timeline. He also said that no deadline has been set for this.
