IMD Warns of Heavy Rain Across 23 States; Flood Risk Rises in Parts of Madhya Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert warning of widespread rainfall across several parts of the country over the next 24 hours. According to the latest forecast, many states could witness heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds as the southwest monsoon remains active over large parts of India.

The weather system is expected to affect northern, central, eastern, western, and northeastern regions, increasing the possibility of waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localized flooding. Madhya Pradesh is among the states where continuous rainfall has raised concerns over flood-like conditions in several areas.

Active Monsoon System Driving Widespread Rainfall

According to the IMD, a low-pressure system that developed over Jharkhand and Odisha is moving toward Madhya Pradesh, strengthening monsoon activity across the country. As this weather system advances inland, rainfall is expected to intensify in multiple regions.

Meteorologists have warned that the combination of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds could lead to difficult weather conditions, particularly in low-lying urban areas and districts located near rivers and hilly terrain.

Wind speeds are likely to range between 40 and 60 km/h in several states. In some parts of southern India, stronger gusts of up to 70 km/h may also occur during thunderstorms.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

Maharashtra Under Special Heavy Rain Alert

The IMD has issued a separate rainfall advisory for Maharashtra, where several regions are expected to receive intense showers.

Areas under close watch include:

  • Konkan region
  • Mumbai and nearby coastal districts
  • Goa
  • Madhya Maharashtra
  • Vidarbha

The department noted that parts of Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra have already recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the previous 24 hours. Additional spells of rain are expected over the coming days, increasing the possibility of waterlogging and travel disruptions.

Residents in these areas have been advised to monitor local weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.

States Likely to Receive Heavy Rain

The active monsoon system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across several regions of the country.

Northern India

Heavy rainfall is likely in:

  • Delhi-NCR
  • Punjab
  • Haryana
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Rajasthan

These states may also experience thunderstorms, lightning, and brief periods of strong winds.

Central and Eastern India

Rainfall activity is expected to remain intense in:

  • Madhya Pradesh
  • Bihar
  • Jharkhand
  • Odisha
  • Chhattisgarh

With saturated ground conditions in some districts, there is an increased risk of localized flooding, overflowing drains, and disruption to road transport.

Northeastern States

The weather department has also forecast significant rainfall in several northeastern states, including:

  • Assam
  • Meghalaya
  • Arunachal Pradesh
  • Nagaland
  • Manipur
  • Mizoram
  • Tripura

Many hilly districts in the region may experience landslides, while rising river levels could affect nearby settlements.

Flood Risk Increases in Madhya Pradesh

Continuous rainfall has led to growing concerns over flood-like conditions in parts of Madhya Pradesh. Water levels in rivers and reservoirs may rise further if heavy showers continue over the next few days.

Low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable to water accumulation, while residents living near rivers have been advised to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Emergency services are expected to remain on alert in districts where rainfall intensity is forecast to remain high.

Safety Advisory for Residents

With severe weather expected across multiple states, authorities have urged people to take necessary precautions. Residents should avoid waterlogged roads, postpone unnecessary travel during thunderstorms, and stay indoors whenever lightning activity is reported.

People living in hilly regions should remain alert for possible landslides, while those residing near rivers and streams should closely monitor local advisories regarding rising water levels.

Motorists are advised to drive carefully on wet roads, as reduced visibility and slippery conditions can increase the risk of accidents.

Monsoon Expected to Remain Active

The current weather pattern indicates that the southwest monsoon will continue to remain active over several parts of India in the coming days. As the low-pressure system progresses, rainfall is likely to persist across many regions, providing relief from high temperatures while also increasing the risk of flooding and weather-related disruptions.

The IMD has advised citizens to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by state and local authorities to ensure their safety during periods of heavy rainfall.
