The results for JEE Main 2025 Session 1 have been declared, and the Session 2 exams are scheduled to be held from April 2 to April 9, 2025. Around 2.5 lakh top-ranking candidates from JEE Main will qualify for JEE Advanced, which is the gateway to securing admission in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Total IIT Seats Across 23 Institutes

According to Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education, the number of seats in 23 IITs has significantly increased over the past decade.

  • Total IIT seats (2024-25): 1.35 lakh
  • Seats in 2014: 65,000
  • Increase in the last 10 years: More than double

Additionally, the government has allocated provisions in the 2025-26 budget to further expand infrastructure in IITs, particularly in the five IITs established after 2014.

Expansion Plans for Five IITs

The Union Budget 2025-26 has announced funding for enhancing infrastructure, aiming to accommodate an additional 6,500 students across five IITs:

  1. IIT Hyderabad (Telangana)
  2. IIT Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh)
  3. IIT-BHU Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh)
  4. IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh)
  5. IIT Patna (Bihar)

These IITs are now fully operational from their permanent campuses, and the government has allocated over ₹1,830 crore for their development, which includes building hostels and academic facilities.

Olympiad-Based Admission at IIT Madras

For the first time, IIT Madras has introduced Olympiad-based admissions for its BTech programs starting from the 2025-26 academic year.

  • Who is eligible? Students excelling in national and international Olympiads.
  • Admission process: Through the Science Olympiad Excellence program.
  • Significance: These admissions will be outside the JEE Advanced framework, providing an alternative route for talented students to secure a seat in IIT Madras.

This initiative marks a new opportunity for exceptional students in mathematics and science, allowing them to join IITs based on their performance in prestigious Olympiads.

With expanded infrastructure, increased seat capacity, and alternative admission routes, IITs are set to provide even greater opportunities for students in 2025 and beyond.
