Nowadays, cases of heart attack and heart disease are increasing rapidly among the youth. Due to the hectic life, poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle, the risk of heart diseases is increasing. In such a situation, it is important that we pay attention to our lifestyle and eating habits so that the heart can be kept healthy.
Recently, renowned American cardiologist Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez has shared some very easy and effective tips to maintain heart health, by adopting which heart diseases can be avoided.
Follow these tips to keep your heart healthy
1. Walk as much as possible and do not sit for long periods of time
According to Dr. Lopez-Jimenez, sitting in one place all day has a bad effect on the heart. To keep the body active, it is necessary to walk or do light exercise for at least 30 minutes every day.
2. Eat more fruits and green vegetables
Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber, which help in strengthening the heart. Spinach, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, berries and citrus fruits are considered very beneficial for the heart.
3. Eat whole grains
Brown rice, oats, quinoa, barley and whole wheat are rich in fibre and nutrients. They help control blood sugar and lower cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.
4. Choose the right fats
Not all fats are harmful to the body. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados and fish are good for the heart. Avoid trans fats and processed foods.
5. Choose healthy options for protein
To keep the heart healthy, consume lean protein i.e. chicken, fish, eggs, beans, pulses, soy and low-fat dairy products. Omega-3 fatty acids found especially in salmon and sardine fish are very beneficial for the heart.
6. Reduce your salt intake
Eating too much salt can increase blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease. Processed and packaged foods contain a lot of hidden salt, so homemade food is the best option.
7. Avoid overeating and eat the right amount
Overeating increases the risk of obesity and metabolic disorders. To eat the right amount of food, use a smaller plate, eat slowly and eat only when you are hungry.
8. Maintain balance in daily diet
Your daily diet should be balanced, which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and proteins. A pre-planned healthy meal plan can save you from unhealthy foods.
9. Eat your favorite things sometimes, but in limited quantity
Dr. Lopez-Jimenez says that giving up favorite things completely can increase cravings and lead to bad eating habits. Therefore, sometimes you can eat dark chocolate, light sweets or some snacks, but keep the quantity limited.
