As soon as we think of Indian street food, things like samosas, pakoras, puri, kachori and chaat come to our mind. As delicious as they taste, they can be equally dangerous for our health. The most harmful thing is the oil used to fry these street foods, which is heated again and again and reused.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also urged the countrymen to reduce the intake of oil in their diet by 10%. He believes that this will help in dealing with the growing obesity problem in the country. Senior interventional cardiologist Dr. Vijay Surase said that excessive consumption of oil not only causes obesity, but also increases the risk of lifestyle diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
How much oil should one consume daily?
According to Dr. Surase, an adult should consume 2 to 4 teaspoons of oil a day. This quantity depends on the person's age, gender and physical activity. The saturated fat and trans fat present in the oil increase fat storage in the body, which leads to obesity and increases the chances of hormonal imbalance. Not only this, excessive oil consumption also affects the hormones that control hunger, due to which people eat more than required and their weight increases.
Harms caused by consuming too much oil
* Heart diseases: Coconut oil, palm oil and ghee contain high saturated fats, which reduce good cholesterol (HDL) and increase bad cholesterol (LDL), increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
* Risk of diabetes: Trans fat increases insulin resistance, which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes.
* Digestive and stomach problems: Repeatedly heated oil increases oxidative stress, which can cause gastric problems, acidity and digestive problems.
* Obesity and high blood pressure: Eating too much oil leads to rapid weight gain, which leads to high blood pressure and other lifestyle related diseases.
Why is reusing oil harmful?
The habit of frying and reusing oil again and again is common in Indian homes, but it can be very dangerous. When oil is heated again and again, acrolein, aldehyde and free radicals start forming in it, which increase inflammation, insulin resistance and heart disease in the body.
How are street food and fried food increasing diseases?
Samosas, pakoras, puris and other fried items are an important part of Indian diet, but their excessive consumption can be harmful. Street food and fried dishes made in hotels are made by heating the oil again and again, which increases the trans fat and harmful elements present in it. These promote diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity.
