Holi in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, is famous across the country. The celebrations begin almost a month in advance, with different rituals and festivities taking place every day. The colorful streets of Mathura and Vrindavan attract thousands of visitors who come from far and wide to witness the grand Holi celebrations of Braj. Every corner of Mathura and Vrindavan, from temples to streets, gets drenched in vibrant colors, making it an unforgettable experience.
However, if you have been visiting Mathura-Vrindavan every year for Holi and are looking for a new experience, Gokul is the perfect destination. Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, Gokul is known for being the place where Lord Krishna spent his childhood. The Holi celebrations in Gokul are no less grand than those in Mathura and Vrindavan, offering a unique experience filled with devotion, joy, and traditional festivities.
This time, instead of visiting the usual places, take a trip to Gokul and explore these beautiful and historic spots where Holi is celebrated with great enthusiasm.
1. Raman Reti – Where Krishna Played in His Childhood
Raman Reti is one of the most serene and spiritually significant places in Gokul. It is believed that Lord Krishna played here as a child, rolling in the sand and performing divine pastimes (leelas). Even today, devotees come here to roll in the sacred sand, believing it to be a source of spiritual purification.
The area is home to several ashrams, designed in the shape of huts, where sages and saints reside. A beautiful pond at the back of the complex adds to its charm. The temple here houses an Ashtadhatu (eight-metal) idol of Radha-Krishna, where an elephant performs the aarti every morning and evening. Visitors can also find a canteen for refreshments and enjoy spotting deer and ostriches outside the temple.
2. Chaurasi Khambha (84 Pillars) – The Historic Nand Bhawan
One of the most significant and historical sites in Gokul is Chaurasi Khambha, also known as Nand Bhawan. This ancient temple, built on 84 intricately carved pillars, holds great religious importance.
According to legend, Nand Baba and Yashoda took refuge here with baby Krishna to protect him from the wrath of King Kansa. The temple’s architecture is believed to be designed by Lord Vishwakarma himself, representing the four pilgrimage sites (Char Dham) of Hinduism.
The walls of the temple are adorned with carvings that depict the childhood pastimes of Krishna, offering a glimpse into his early years. This sacred site is a must-visit, especially during Holi, when the entire temple comes alive with festivities and devotion.
3. Thakurani Ghat – The Sacred Riverbank of Gokul
Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, Thakurani Ghat is one of the most famous ghats in Gokul. It is believed that Mother Yashoda used to bring young Krishna here for his daily baths. The tranquil and scenic surroundings of this ghat make it a peaceful retreat for visitors.
During Holi, Thakurani Ghat transforms into a vibrant and colorful spectacle, as devotees gather to celebrate by singing devotional songs, playing with colors, and offering prayers. This ghat holds special significance for the followers of the Vallabhacharya sect and is considered a sacred place for performing various religious rituals.
Visitors can also enjoy boating on the Yamuna River, making their Holi experience even more memorable.
