Instagram constantly introduces new tools to help users personalise their profiles and control how their content is seen. One of the most useful additions is the ability to pin posts, videos and Reels to the top of your profile grid. This feature allows you to showcase your most important or favourite content so that anyone visiting your page sees it first.

Normally, Instagram arranges posts in chronological order, with the latest upload appearing at the top. This means older but more meaningful posts can quickly get buried under new uploads. The pin feature solves this problem by letting you permanently keep up to three selected posts at the very top, regardless of when they were originally shared.

What happens when you pin a post

Once a post is pinned:

• It stays fixed in the first row of your profile grid
• It does not move down even after you upload new content
• Visitors immediately see these highlighted posts when opening your profile

Pinning limit and replacement rule

Instagram allows only three pinned posts at a time. If you try to pin a fourth post, the app will show a message informing you that the limit has been reached.

At that moment, Instagram gives you the option to replace the oldest pinned post with the new one. If you confirm, the earliest pinned item will automatically be unpinned and replaced by the latest selection.

This system ensures your profile always highlights only your top three choices.

Step-by-step guide to pin a post on Instagram

Follow these simple steps:

1. Open the Instagram app on your smartphone.
2. Tap on your profile picture at the bottom right to open your profile page.
3. Scroll through your grid and open the photo, video or Reel you want to highlight.
4. Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner of that post.
5. Select Pin to your profile from the options.

That’s it. The selected post will instantly move to the top row of your profile and display a small pin icon to indicate it has been fixed there.

How to replace an existing pinned post

If you already have three pinned posts and want to change one of them:

1. Repeat the same steps to pin a new post.
2. A pop-up message will appear saying the pin limit has been reached.
3. Confirm your choice to replace the oldest pinned post.

Instagram will automatically remove the oldest pin and add the new one at the top.

You can unpin anytime

If you no longer want a post to stay highlighted:

1. Open the pinned post from your profile.
2. Tap the three dots on the post.
3. Choose Unpin from your profile.

The post will return to its original position based on its upload date.
