what is the story behind this

Bhishma Pitamah gave up his life after 58 days when he was lying on a bed of arrows. At that time everyone came to meet him, then Shri Krishna also came, then Bhishma Pitamah asked Shri Krishna that you know everything. You know everything, tell me what sin did I commit for which I got such a terrible punishment, then Shri Krishna said Pitamah! You have that power, by which you can see your previous birth. You should have seen it yourself.

On this Bhishma Pitamah said, O Devaki Nandan! What am I doing lying here alone? I have seen everything, I have seen 100 births till now. I have not done a single deed in those 100 births, the result of which is that my whole body is bound, every coming moment brings more pain. Shri Krishna replied, you go back one more Bhaav, you will get the answer.

Bhishma remembered his 101 year old birth

Bhishma meditated and saw that 101 Bhavaas ago he was the king of a city. He was going somewhere on the road with a troop of his soldiers. A soldier came running and said, “O King! There is a snake lying on the road. If our army passes over it, it will die.” Bhishma said, “Do one thing. Wrap it in a piece of wood and throw it in the bushes.” The soldier did the same. He wrapped the snake in a piece of wood and threw it in the bushes. Unfortunately, the bushes were thorny. The snake got stuck in them. The more it tried to get out of them, the more it got stuck. The thorns kept piercing its body. Blood started flowing. Slowly he started moving towards death. After 18 days of agony, he breathed his last.
