Bollywood actor Govinda has once again made a striking revelation about turning down a role in James Cameron’s Avatar (2009). In a recent interview, the actor claimed that he was offered ₹18 crore to be a part of the Hollywood blockbuster but declined the role due to creative and physical concerns.
Govinda’s Meeting With James Cameron
Speaking to Mukesh Khanna on his YouTube channel, Govinda shared that his connection with the project began when he met a Sardarji in America, to whom he had given a successful business idea. Years later, that same person introduced him to filmmaker James Cameron.
"He asked me to do a film with James Cameron, so I invited them over for dinner to discuss it," Govinda recalled.
Surprisingly, he also claimed to have suggested the title Avatar for the movie.
Why Govinda Rejected Avatar
Govinda said that while the film's offer was lucrative, he had reservations about the role. He explained, "James told me that the film’s hero was handicapped, so I said I wouldn’t do it. He offered me ₹18 crore and told me I would have to shoot for 410 days. I said that’s fine, but if I paint my body, I will end up in the hospital."
The actor emphasized how important an actor's physical well-being is in their profession. "Our body is the only instrument we have. Some offers may seem appealing professionally, but you must also consider their impact on your health. Sometimes, you have to apologize for years for rejecting a film, as people in the industry have strong egos."
Avatar’s Phenomenal Success
James Cameron’s Avatar went on to become one of the highest-grossing films of all time upon its release in 2009, redefining sci-fi cinema with its groundbreaking visuals and storytelling. The franchise continued with Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, which also achieved massive global success.
Govinda’s Comeback
While he may have missed out on Avatar, Govinda is set to return to the big screen soon. On The Great Indian Kapil Show, he revealed that three of his films are scheduled to release in 2025. Fans are eagerly awaiting his comeback to Bollywood.
