Vehicle Fitness Test Price Hike: The Government of India has increased the fees for vehicle fitness tests across the country. The highest fitness test fees have been increased for vehicles that are 10 years or older. Previously, the highest fitness fees were for vehicles older than 15 years, but after the fifth amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, a new fee structure has been introduced, increasing the cost of fitness tests for vehicles 10-15 years, 15-20 years, and more than 20 years old.

Why did the Indian government increase the fees?

The Indian government has increased fitness test fees for old commercial vehicles by 10 times. The fee structure has also been revised for two-wheelers, three-wheelers, LMVs, HGVs, and MGVs. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), this increase in vehicle fitness test fees is aimed at removing unsafe and highly polluting vehicles from Indian roads and encouraging people to replace them with more efficient vehicles.

According to the new rules of the Motor Vehicles Act, the fitness test fees for vehicles less than 15 years old have also been revised. Two-wheelers will have to pay ₹400, light motor vehicles ₹600, and medium and heavy commercial vehicles ₹1,000. According to the new rules, for vehicles older than 15 years, three-wheelers will have to pay ₹600, three-wheelers ₹400 to ₹600, and light motor vehicles (cars) ₹600 to ₹1,000. Medium goods or passenger vehicles will have to pay ₹1,800, and heavy goods or passenger vehicles (trucks or buses) will have to pay ₹2,500.

As vehicles age, they become a greater safety hazard. Furthermore, the pollutants they emit also become more harmful. Older vehicles and commercial vehicles also develop engine-related problems as they age.
