According to Dr. Vani Puri Rawat, senior gynecologist in Ghaziabad, babies can suffer from Down syndrome during pregnancy. The main cause of Down syndrome is genetic. There are three main types of Down syndrome. These include trisomy 21, translocation and mosaicism. Due to Down syndrome, children are born with many serious diseases and need medical care throughout their lives. Such children are late in learning and understanding. This disorder can be detected even before the birth of the child.

 

These tests must be done to identify Down syndrome

Dr. Vani Puri Rawat explains that ultrasound and blood tests can be done to detect Down syndrome. Screening tests should be done in these. First trimester screening test. It includes NT scan (nuchal translucency scan) and blood test between 11 to 13 weeks. Second trimester screening test is done between 15 to 20 weeks. Combined test This is a combination of first and second trimester tests, which gives more accurate results.

A cell-free DNA (cfDNA) test should also be done. This is a blood test that can be done starting from 10 weeks of pregnancy. This test measures the amount of DNA from the placenta and looks for the extra chromosome 21 of Down syndrome.

Can Down syndrome be cured?

Former Dr. Rakesh Kumar of the Pediatric Department at Delhi AIIMS says that there is no cure for this syndrome. It can be controlled only with the help of therapy.
