Gambhir admitted that the issue of frequent injuries has been discussed at the highest level of the team management. He said, "Many of our players were unavailable for this series as well. This will maintain continuity in the team and allow us to regularly promote our best players in the right direction."

The Indian team currently sits fifth in the World Test Championship points table. India is ranked above Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Bangladesh. However, Gambhir declined to place too much importance on the rankings.

The second test will be played in Colombo.
