Residents of Jammu and Kashmir will now have to shell out more for petrol and diesel, as the government has officially issued a notification to increase fuel prices. The hike, which was announced earlier during the Union Territory’s budget, has now been put into effect.
The move comes as part of the government's revised taxation strategy to increase revenue. With this decision, transportation and daily expenses in the region are expected to be directly impacted, triggering concerns about inflation among locals.
What’s Changing?
The exact quantum of the price hike is yet to be detailed in the public notification, but sources suggest it could range between Rs 2 to Rs 3 per litre, depending on the type of fuel and district-level taxes.
Budget Announcement Comes into Effect
The increase was part of the 2024–25 J&K Budget, where the administration had hinted at adjustments in fuel taxes to support infrastructural development and meet rising financial needs.
This is the first fuel price adjustment in the region this fiscal year, and experts believe it could have a cascading effect on the cost of goods, transport fares, and essential commodities.
