Petrol-Diesel Price Today: A fake document is circulating on social media claiming that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has ordered an increase in petrol prices by ₹10 and diesel prices by ₹12.50. However, the PIB (Press Information Bureau) Fact Check has debunked these claims.
What did PIB say?
PIB has clearly stated that this is fake news and that the government has not issued any such order. PIB has appealed to citizens not to share such unverified and misleading news on social media.
Meanwhile, official sources indicate that domestic LPG cylinders could become more expensive by ₹40-₹50 per cylinder in the coming months. This would be the first major increase in fuel prices in nearly four years. Crude oil prices in the international market have recently risen to approximately $120-₹126 per barrel and remain above the $100 per barrel mark.
Will prices increase?
Meanwhile, India's Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V. Anantha Nageswaran has warned that the combined impact of a below-normal monsoon and rising energy prices could lead to a "sudden spike in inflation" in the coming months—a double blow for families already reeling from rising petrol and diesel prices. Nageswaran identified four distinct ways in which the conflict in West Asia is impacting India—sudden changes in prices and supply, disruptions in trade, persistent logistics costs, and a decline in remittances—and cautioned that this crisis is not a temporary storm.
He said India imports 60% of its LPG needs, 90% of which comes through the now-closed Strait of Hormuz. He described it as a "very challenging situation."
Last week, a senior Oil Ministry official said that state-owned oil companies were incurring a loss of about Rs 20 per litre on petrol and about Rs 100 per litre on diesel due to the retail prices remaining unchanged for almost four years despite the increase in international oil prices.
