Meta AI: Meta Platforms has begun leveraging artificial intelligence to further strengthen age verification. The company behind Instagram and Facebook has introduced a new AI system aimed at identifying users under the age of 13. According to the company, this technology looks for clues based on photos, videos, and user activity, but it's designed with privacy in mind.

How does the AI system work?

Meta's AI system doesn't directly identify individuals, but instead attempts to understand patterns and signals. It analyzes common visual cues in photos and videos, such as height or body structure, as well as posts, captions, bios, and comments to estimate a user's age.

The company has clarified that this is not facial recognition, meaning it does not identify any specific person but only estimates the probable age.

What if the AI considers you underage?

If the system detects that an account belongs to someone under 13, immediate action can be taken, including temporarily deactivating the account. Users will need to prove their age to regain access. This feature is currently being tested in select countries, including the United States, and may be rolled out to other countries gradually.

Same method as other tools

Meta's new system is somewhat similar to third-party age-estimating tools like Yoti and k-ID. These tools also estimate age based on visual cues without revealing someone's true identity. Meta has also strengthened the Teen Accounts feature. Users aged 13 to 17 are automatically placed in this mode.

Messages from unknown people are limited. Content filters are tightened. Features like livestreaming are restricted for users under 16. This feature first appeared on Instagram and is now being implemented on Facebook as well.

Why was this step taken now?

This significant change comes at a time when questions are being raised about the safety of children on Meta. Recently, a US court ruled against the company, stating that users were not properly informed about the platform's security. Consequently, the company was also fined heavily. In this context, Meta's AI system is being considered not just a new feature but also a necessary step taken amid increasing pressure.
