Electricity Bill: Millions of electricity consumers in Delhi are about to face a tough time paying higher bills. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved the capital's electricity distribution companies to levy a Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge. This decision could increase the monthly electricity bills of Delhi residents.

Why will electricity bills increase?
According to the DERC, the cost of purchasing electricity increased significantly during May 2026. To offset this additional expense, power companies requested permission to levy a surcharge, which the Commission has approved. This arrangement will remain in effect on a month-to-month basis until further orders.

How much impact will each company's customers have?
The Commission has allowed the three major power companies to charge different rates for FPPAS.

• BSES Rajdhani (BRPL) – 7.94% extra surcharge
• BSES Yamuna (BYPL) – 7.43% extra surcharge
• Tata Power-DDL (TPDDL)- 2.21% extra surcharge.
  Total FPPAS will then reach 17.94%, 17.43% and 12.21%.

What is FPPAS?
Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment (FPPAS) is an additional charge that power companies levy on Delhi residents when the cost of purchasing fuel and electricity increases. This charge is determined based on the fixed charge and energy charge in the electricity bill.

Who will have to pay more?
This decision is likely to have a greater impact on BRPL and BYPL consumers. However, consumers in the TPDDL area are likely to be less affected, as the extra surcharge rate there has been lower.

Could bills increase further?
The DERC has clarified that this relief is temporary and will be reviewed monthly based on power purchase costs. Therefore, if power purchases remain expensive in the coming months, it will certainly impact Delhi residents' electricity bills.
