The surgery was very difficult due to the size of the tumor and its attachment to the intestines, bladder and other organs. It was not easy to remove the tumor because it could accidentally damage any organ.

Doctors at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital saved the life of a patient by performing a major and risky surgery. This patient had a 10.6 kg tumor in his stomach, which had grown so large that it had spread to many important parts of the stomach. This surgery was done jointly by a team of doctors from VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital. Doctors said that the patient was suffering from this disease for the last eight months. The tumor was so large that it was putting pressure on many organs of the stomach, due to which the patient's condition was getting worse.
These doctors did the surgery
This difficult operation, which lasted for about 6 hours, was led by Dr. Shivani B. Paruthi. She was guided by VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital Director Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Head of Surgery Department Dr. R.K. Chejhara and Head of Gynecology Department Dr. Kavita. During the surgery, the responsibility of anesthesia was taken by Dr. D.K. Meena, Dr. Sapna Bhatia and Dr. Vishnu.
The situation had gotten so bad
Doctors said that the surgery was very difficult due to the size of the tumor and its adhesion to the intestines, bladder and other organs. It was not easy to remove the tumor because any organ could get damaged by mistake. Using precise techniques, the doctors completely removed this 10.6 kg gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST).
What is a GIST tumor?
Dr. Sandeep Bansal told that GIST is a rare type of cancer, which occurs in the stomach and intestinal tissue. This tumor is formed from special types of cells called 'interstitial cells of Kajal'. These cells help in controlling the intestines. If it is not treated on time, it can grow rapidly and damage other parts of the body.
Doctors gave this information
Dr. Sandeep Bansal, Director of VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, said, 'This surgery is a proof of the talent and hard work of our team. Removing such a large tumor was not an easy task, but our team did it. We will try to give new life to patients by doing such difficult operations in the future.' He also told that after the surgery, the patient's condition is now stable and the medical oncology team is looking after him so that he can recover quickly.
