US report on India-China relations enrages Beijing.
A recent report by the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) on India-China relations has angered China. The report states that China is seeking to take advantage of the easing of tensions with India along the LAC to stabilize bilateral relations and prevent further strengthening of US-India relations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated in a press briefing on Thursday (December 25) that China opposes the Pentagon's comments regarding its national defense policy. He also clarified that China views its relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective. When asked whether China would try to disrupt US-India relations by taking advantage of the easing of tensions with India in disputed border areas, Lin Jian stated that China focuses on developing relations with India, not targeting any third country.
Chinese Foreign Ministry hits back.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, China is ready to strengthen dialogue with India, enhance mutual trust, and advance bilateral relations towards stable, healthy, and sustainable development. This statement by China comes in the context of the Pentagon's 'Military and Security Developments Involving the People's Republic of China' report, which states that after the easing of tensions on the Line of Actual Control (LAC), China is trying to stabilize relations with India to prevent the deepening of the India-US strategic alliance.
The Pentagon report describes Arunachal Pradesh as being as important to China's core interests (Taiwan and the South China Sea), and also highlights China's growing military ties with Pakistan.
How are India-China relations currently?
Border tensions between India and China have eased in recent months. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in October 2024, the two countries initiated high-level discussions on border management. Steps have been taken, including direct flights, visa facilitation, and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
