The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently presented the Guidance Document on Diabetes Mellitus in Children at the National Conference on Public Health Services. This document sets out a clear and systematic approach for the identification, screening, treatment, and long-term care of diabetes in children. This, for the first time, integrates pediatric diabetes care into the country's public health system.

Genetic factors, infections, and poor diagnosis can contribute to this, while diet, lifestyle, and lack of physical activity play a major role in type 2 diabetes.

If diabetes in children is not treated promptly, it can lead to serious complications, including kidney failure, vision loss, heart disease, and, in many cases, even life-threatening complications.

The new guidelines will now implement a uniform system across the country. This emphasizes screening children from birth to 18 years of age. Early detection will be conducted at the school and community levels. If a child shows symptoms, their blood sugar will be tested immediately and, if necessary, they will be referred to the district hospital where appropriate treatment will be initiated.

Free treatment for children in government hospitals 

The highlight of this scheme is that children will receive free treatment in government hospitals. This includes necessary tests, insulin, glucometers, test strips, and regular follow-ups. This will especially benefit poor families, as diabetes treatment is long-term and expensive. The new system integrates the entire treatment process to ensure no interruptions. Treatment will be available from the village and school level to the district hospital and medical college. This will ensure children receive the ongoing care that is crucial for this disease.

Emphasis on 4T as well 

The 4Ts (Ts) are also emphasized for early identification. These include frequent urination, excessive thirst, persistent fatigue, and sudden weight loss. These signs can alert parents and teachers in time. Family and caregivers will also be trained to provide proper care for children. Information will be provided on administering insulin, checking blood sugar, and what to do in an emergency.
