ChatGPT Ads Expand to Free Users: Here’s How Sponsored Messages Work and What Happens to Your Privacy

ChatGPT is undergoing a significant change as advertising becomes part of the experience for more users. People using the Free plan—and, in supported markets, the lower-cost Go plan—may now see sponsored content while interacting with the AI chatbot.
The move gives businesses a new way to reach potential customers while allowing OpenAI to generate revenue that can help support free and lower-cost access to its AI services. However, the introduction of advertising naturally raises questions about where ads appear, whether they can affect ChatGPT's answers, and how much information advertisers can access.
Here is what users need to know about the evolving advertising experience inside ChatGPT.
Where Will Ads Appear in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT advertisements are designed to remain separate from the AI-generated response. Instead of inserting promotional messages directly into an answer, eligible ads can appear below the end of a ChatGPT response.
Sponsored placements are clearly identified so users can distinguish advertising from information generated by ChatGPT.
OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Advertisers cannot pay to change, rank or shape the chatbot's response. In other words, a company buying an advertisement does not gain control over what ChatGPT says about its products, competitors or related topics.
The number and availability of advertisements can vary depending on factors such as the user's region, plan and whether a relevant advertisement matches the conversation.
Which ChatGPT Users May See Advertisements?
Advertising is primarily associated with ChatGPT's Free and Go plans in markets where the system is available.
OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts remain free from advertising. Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 are also excluded from receiving ads.
There are additional restrictions around sensitive conversations. Ads are not eligible to appear alongside discussions involving sensitive or regulated subjects such as personal health, mental health and politics.
Temporary Chats also do not display advertisements.
How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Ad to Display?
Relevance plays an important role in selecting advertisements.
For example, the advertising system may consider the subject and intent of the current conversation when deciding whether a particular sponsored placement is relevant. Depending on the user's location and advertising settings, additional signals from the broader ChatGPT experience may also be used for personalization.
Users can turn off personalized advertising. Doing so does not necessarily remove advertisements entirely. Instead, ads may continue to be selected primarily according to the context of the current conversation.
This distinction is important: disabling personalization and choosing an ad-free experience are not the same thing.
Are Private ChatGPT Conversations Shared With Advertisers?
Privacy is likely to be one of the biggest concerns for users as advertising expands across ChatGPT.
OpenAI says advertisers do not receive access to private ChatGPT conversations, chat history, memories or personal account details. The company also says it does not sell users' personal data to advertisers.
Advertisers can receive aggregated, non-identifying information about campaign performance, such as the total number of ad views or clicks.
If a user directly chooses to communicate with an advertiser through an advertising feature, however, the advertiser may receive the messages that the user intentionally sends to it.
Can Users Control the Ads They See?
ChatGPT provides advertising controls for eligible users in supported regions. Depending on availability, users can manage personalization, dismiss an unwanted advertisement, report problematic sponsored content, review why an ad was displayed and clear information used for advertising.
Free users may also have access to an ad-free option with additional restrictions. This version removes advertising but comes with lower usage limits and reduced access to certain features. Alternatively, users can move to an eligible paid subscription that does not include advertising.
What Does ChatGPT Ads Mean for Businesses?
The advertising system also creates a new marketing channel for companies.
Businesses can use OpenAI's advertising platform to create and manage campaigns, set budgets and bids, upload advertising material and review campaign performance. OpenAI has also expanded advertising tools such as cost-per-click bidding, geographic targeting, conversion measurement and other campaign optimization capabilities.
The platform has grown rapidly since its initial rollout. OpenAI said on August 31, 2026, that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days and was being used by tens of thousands of advertisers.
The company also announced self-service Ads Manager access across additional regions, including India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
ChatGPT Answers and Ads Will Remain Separate
For everyday users, the most important distinction is that a sponsored placement is not part of ChatGPT's answer.
OpenAI says advertisements are clearly labeled, run separately from the system generating ChatGPT responses and cannot be used by advertisers to influence those answers. Seeing a company's advertisement also does not mean that ChatGPT or OpenAI is recommending or endorsing that company.
As advertising expands into more countries, the ChatGPT experience will therefore differ depending on a user's subscription, region and advertising preferences.
For Free users, sponsored placements could become an increasingly familiar part of using the service. At the same time, OpenAI is providing controls over personalization and maintaining ad-free options for users who prefer an experience without sponsored content.
