The coming time may bring good news for the senior citizens of the country. On February 1, 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the second full budget of the Modi government's third term. This budget is being called the 'Budget of Expectations' because it is expected to have something special for every section of society. In particular, there is news for the elderly that they have been waiting for for many years. According to sources, the senior citizen concession on railway ticket bookings may be restored in Budget 2026.

Why is this budget special for the elderly?
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian Railways offered significant concessions to senior citizens on train travel. Under this scheme, male passengers aged 60 years or older received a 40 percent discount on fares. Female passengers aged 58 years or older received a direct 50 percent discount. This facility was available in all coaches, from Sleeper to Third AC, Second AC, and First AC. However, due to the heavy financial losses incurred by the railways during the lockdown in March 2020, this concession was temporarily suspended. Since then, senior citizens have had to pay the full fare, which has increased the burden on their pockets.
New proposal from the Ministry of Railways
According to the latest information, the Ministry of Railways has prepared a proposal to restore the concession, keeping in mind the convenience of the elderly. Although this has not yet been finalized in the pre-budget meetings, experts believe that, considering the upcoming elections and social concerns, the government may announce this in the budget this time. The railways incur an additional expenditure of approximately Rs 1600 to 2000 crore annually due to this concession, but given the continuous demand from senior citizens, reinstating it could prove to be a masterstroke for the government.
Travel and ticket booking will become easier.
If this concession is restored, senior citizens will not have to go through any separate process to book tickets. As before, they will only need to enter their age while booking tickets on the IRCTC portal or at the railway counter, and the discount will be applied automatically. Amidst limited income after retirement and rising inflation, this relief in train fares will provide mental and financial peace of mind to senior citizens. Now, all eyes are on the budget to be presented on February 1st, to see if the Finance Minister will fulfill this long-standing demand of senior citizens and give them a new gift.
