On May 14, 2025, BSF Jawan Purnab Kumar Sahu was handed over to Indian authorities by Pakistan after being in their custody for nearly three weeks. The exchange took place at the Attari border in a peaceful manner and followed established protocols between the two countries.
Sahu, who is from Hooghly, West Bengal, accidentally crossed into Pakistan on April 23, 2025, while helping border farmers near the Zero Line in Ferozepur, Punjab. He was immediately detained by Pakistan's Border Security Force (BSF). In return, India had captured a Pakistani Ranger who had crossed into Indian territory in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, on the India-Pakistan border. The exchange of the two soldiers took place at 10:30 AM at the joint check post Attari.
This handover marks a significant moment in the recent de-escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan. The two countries had previously engaged in missile and drone strikes but signed a ceasefire agreement to restore peace. Despite the tensions, the peaceful return of both the BSF jawan and the Pakistani ranger highlights the importance of protocols in resolving such incidents.
The BSF issued a statement confirming that PK Sahu had been in Pakistan's custody since his arrest on April 23 and had now been peacefully returned through the established channels. The BSF further noted that such border-crossing incidents are not uncommon and are usually resolved through flag meetings and mutual understanding between both nations.
