The latest Bihar Assembly election results have reshaped the state’s political landscape, with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) securing a decisive victory. Out of the 243 seats, the ruling coalition won an impressive 202 seats, marking one of its strongest performances in recent years. According to the Election Commission’s data, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats, followed closely by its alliance partner, the Janata Dal (United), which secured 85 seats. Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) also delivered a significant contribution to the NDA tally by winning 19 seats.
Former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) claimed 5 seats, while Upendra Kushwaha-led Rashtriya Lok Morcha won 4 seats. Together, these victories helped consolidate NDA’s stronghold across the state.
In sharp contrast, the opposition ‘INDIA’ bloc faced a major setback. The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the main opposition party, managed to win only 25 seats. The Congress finished with 6 seats, the CPI(ML) Liberation won 2 seats, and the CPI(M) received just one. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM performed better than many expected, winning 5 seats, while the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Indian Inclusive Party picked up one seat each.
In terms of seat-sharing, the BJP and JD(U) contested 101 seats each as part of their pre-poll arrangement. Their ally, the LJP (Ram Vilas), fielded candidates in 28 constituencies. Meanwhile, the RJD dominated the opposition alliance by contesting 141 seats, followed by the Congress with 61 seats and CPI(ML) Liberation with 20 seats.
RJD Tops the Chart in Total Votes
When it comes to total votes received, the RJD stood far ahead of all parties. The party secured nearly 11.1 million votes, making it the “crorepati” of Bihar politics this election season. The BJP followed with around 9.9 million votes, while JD(U) received close to 9.5 million votes.
Despite contesting fewer seats than in 2020, both the BJP and JD(U) posted an increase in their vote shares. The BJP’s vote percentage rose from 19.46% in the previous election to 20.07% this year. The party contested 101 seats this time, down from 110 in 2020, but still managed a higher share of total votes.
The JD(U) also witnessed notable improvement in performance. Its vote share jumped from 15.39% in 2020 to 19.26% this year. In the earlier election, JD(U) contested 115 seats, but in 2025 it limited its candidates to 101 constituencies, demonstrating a more focused and efficient strategy.
Meanwhile, the RJD recorded the highest vote percentage among all major parties at 23%. The party had won 23.11% of the votes in 2020 when it contested 144 seats; this time it competed in 141 seats but maintained nearly the same share.
Vote Performance of Smaller Parties
Chirag Paswan’s LJP (Ram Vilas), now an NDA member, registered a vote share of 4.98%. In 2020, the undivided LJP had earned 5.66% of the vote while contesting 135 seats. The party’s reduced vote share this year is attributed to its participation in only 28 seats.
Within the opposition, the Congress saw a mild decline in popularity. Its vote share slipped from 9.48% in 2020 to 8.72% in 2025, after fielding candidates in 61 constituencies compared to 70 previously. The CPI(ML) Liberation also recorded a slight decrease, from 3.16% to 2.84%.
AIMIM showed growth, securing nearly 2% of the vote—an improvement from its 1.24% share in the 2020 election.
With a commanding seat tally for the NDA and a clear shift in voter preference reflected in vote percentages, the Bihar election results highlight an evolving political alignment in the state—one that has strengthened the ruling coalition’s position while posing new challenges for the opposition.
