This study was published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health. The research was led by Dr. Hana Kahleova and her team. Significantly, this study wasn't based solely on guesswork or computer models; it examined the eating habits of real people and their effects on their bodies in detail.

This is how the comparison happened

The study compared two diets: one was a low-fat, vegetarian diet that excluded animal foods like meat, dairy, and eggs. The other was a Mediterranean diet, which included fish, olive oil, vegetables, and limited meat and dairy products. Both diets are considered healthy.

What was the result

This study included 62 overweight adults. All participants followed one diet for 16 weeks and then another for the next 16 weeks. This allowed the researchers to better compare the effects of both diets. The results were quite surprising. Those who followed a strictly vegetarian diet reduced their dietary pollution by approximately 57 percent. In contrast, those who followed a Mediterranean diet reduced pollution by approximately 20 percent. This means that a strictly vegetarian diet has a significantly lower environmental impact.

Positive health outcomes have also been observed. Those following a strictly vegetarian diet have experienced faster weight loss, better blood sugar control, and improved cholesterol levels. All of these factors are associated with a reduced risk of diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
