Bangladesh is poised to make a splash in cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), headed by Tamim Iqbal, has announced the D3 (Domestic 3) tournament, which will be played in all three formats. This competition will be played during Bangladesh's 2026-27 domestic season. The most remarkable thing is that franchises have been included in the D3 tournament. Previously, none of the major names in the cricketing world, from India to England and Australia, have launched franchise competitions in the first-class and ODI formats.
Six companies have acquired franchises participating in D3, which will also play first-class, List A, and T20 matches. The BCB has signed three-year deals with all franchises, and teams will play in all three formats each season.
D3 to start from September 15
According to ESPN Cricinfo, the D3 competition will begin with a T20 tournament, which could start on September 15th. This could be followed by a first-class tournament in January and an ODI tournament in May. Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal stated that this competition was launched to add color to Bangladesh's domestic cricket. Franchise owners will pay the BCB 25 million Bangladeshi taka.
6 Icon Players announced
The names of the six franchises have not yet been finalized, but the icon players for each team have been announced. These six players will be Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Towhid Hridoy, Mosaddek Hossain, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mohammad Naim, and Nurul Hasan. This D3 competition will integrate Bangladesh's first-class, List A, and T20 tournaments.
Bangladesh's domestic season begins on October 3 with the NCL first-class tournament, a regional-level tournament divided into eight different divisions.
The BCB's decision comes after the board suspended the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in August due to financial losses. There have been no updates on the BPL's resumption yet, but claims of fundamentally strengthening the league have emerged.
