Automobile Tips - Now even electric vehicles are equipped with AVAS systems, learn the full details.

With petrol and diesel prices rising daily in the country, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular. Their biggest drawback is that they run silently, posing a risk to pedestrians, the elderly, and the visually impaired. However, this concern has now been alleviated, and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed making Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) mandatory in EVs. Let's learn the full details.

What is AVAS?

An Acoustic Vehicle Alert System is a safety feature that generates an artificial sound in EVs.

It helps alert pedestrians and others to the presence of a vehicle, as electric motor-powered EVs are otherwise silent.

How does AVAS work?

This system automatically activates when an EV's speed drops below 20 km/h or when it is reversing.

The system shuts off as soon as the vehicle exceeds a speed of 20 km/h.

Implementation Timeline

Phase 1 (from October 1, 2026): AVAS will be mandatory for all newly launched electric vehicles.

Phase 2 (from October 1, 2027): All electric vehicles already on sale in the market will also be required to comply with this rule.

Which vehicles will have AVAS?

It will be mandatory for electric vehicles falling under the M category (passenger vehicles like cars and buses) and N category (freight vehicles like trucks).

Which vehicles are excluded?

The system will not be mandatory for electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and e-rickshaws.

This initiative will not only enhance road safety but also ensure that the transition to clean transportation does not compromise pedestrian safety.
