Steaming children during winter is a common and effective treatment that reduces inflammation in the nose and throat, thins mucus, and helps with breathing. However, steaming too often can be dangerous.

Benefits and Precautions of Steaming Babies in Winters
Winter has begun to show its strength in India. Along with it, it has also brought many illnesses. Illnesses like colds, flu, coughs, and body aches are the most common problems during the winter season. While older adults and adults can cope with these ailments, young children face significant difficulties. During the winter season, children are at increased risk of developing fever, coughs, nasal congestion due to colds, and mucus in the throat, which becomes a major concern for parents.
When children at home fall ill during the winter season, parents immediately resort to home remedies or Ayurvedic treatments, the most important of which is steaming. Both Ayurveda and medical science believe that steaming is the most effective treatment for children who fall ill due to cold. Steaming reduces swelling in the nose and throat, thins mucus and makes it easier to expel, and opens the airways. Doctors also recommend steaming children with hot water, but parents must take some precautions while steaming their children.
Why should children be given steam?
In India, doctors recommend regular steam inhalation to reduce or prevent cold-related illnesses. Steam inhalation is very beneficial for colds, sore throats, and nasal congestion. The warm, moist air reduces inflammation in the nose and throat, thins mucus, and clears the airways, providing immediate relief. It also provides significant relief from winter headaches. According to doctors, steam inhalation is especially important for children because they are unable to properly communicate their discomfort, which can lead to a serious illness. Therefore, giving children mild steam is essential for maintaining good health and ensuring they sleep well.
How many times a day should children be given steam?
A common mistake many parents make is giving their children steam multiple times a day, which is completely wrong. Steaming multiple times a day can cause problems for young children. Repeated steaming can dehydrate the throat, leading to sore throats and irritation. Remember to steam only 2-3 times a day for 5-6 minutes, no more. The steam temperature should be normal or moderate, so the child can easily tolerate it. If relief persists after 2-3 days of steaming, or if the child develops symptoms such as high fever, wheezing, severe cough, or shortness of breath, it is important to consult a pediatrician immediately.
