Billy Root, the younger brother of Joe Root, has announced his retirement after a 14-year professional cricket career. He played for Nottinghamshire and Glamorgan.

News of retirements is constantly surfacing in English cricket these days. Now, Billy Root, the younger brother of star batsman Joe Root, has also decided to retire from professional cricket. The 34-year-old announced his retirement via social media on September 23rd. The current 2026 domestic season will be the last of his 14-year professional cricket career.
Billy Root began his professional career in first-class cricket in 2015. He began his career playing for Nottinghamshire and was part of the team's victory in both white-ball tournaments in 2017. He then joined Glamorgan in 2019 and has been with the team for the past seven seasons.
It was a special journey for Glamorgan too.
Billy Root played many memorable innings with Glamorgan. He has nearly 5,000 runs for the team. He was also part of the team that won two ODI Cup titles. In 2019, he played a brilliant innings of 229 against Northamptonshire, which remains the highest score of his career.
Scored more than 6400 runs in his career
Billy Root played 83 first-class matches, 60 List A matches, and 50 T20 matches in his career. He has over 6,400 runs across all three formats. He scored 4,107 runs in first-class cricket, including seven centuries and 17 half-centuries. He has 1,665 runs in international cricket. He scored 634 runs in T20 cricket.
Could not play international cricket for England
Billy Root never played for the England national team. However, he was present as England's 12th man during the 2013 Test match between England and New Zealand at Lord's. At the time, he was part of the MCC Young Cricketers.
Billy and Joe Root played cricket together as children at Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club. Both brothers have a long-standing connection to cricket.
