Frederiksen has succeeded in uniting European countries at a time when US President Donald Trump has called for annexation.

"This will be a decisive election. In the next four years, we, as Danish citizens and European citizens, must stand on our own two feet," Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in a statement. She added, "We must define our relationship with the United States and re-arm to ensure peace on our continent."
