Akhilesh Yadav’s Statue Politics on Gomti Riverfront: A Strategic Bid to Build Caste-Based Support for 2027

In a calculated political move ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav is tapping into symbolic politics by announcing the installation of statues of prominent caste icons along the Gomti Riverfront in Lucknow. These gestures are being seen as part of a larger strategy to consolidate non-Yadav OBCs, Thakurs, and other influential caste groups, expanding his PDA (Pichhda-Dalit-Alpsankhyak) coalition that played a critical role in the 2024 elections.
Three Statues, Three Messages
Akhilesh has so far announced:
- A memorial for Shivdayal Chaurasia, an icon of the Chaurasia OBC community.
- A statue of Suheldev Maharaj, a revered figure among the Rajbhar community.
- A statue of Maharana Pratap, a legendary Kshatriya warrior, aimed at appealing to the Thakur vote bank.
These statues are not just symbolic; Akhilesh has added grandeur by promising gold-laced swords in the hands of Suheldev and Maharana Pratap, further amplifying the gesture to appeal to community pride.
Rebuilding Caste Equations
With BJP making deep inroads into OBC communities over the last decade, SP is working to reclaim that space:
- Rajbhar Community: Akhilesh is countering BJP ally OP Rajbhar by aligning with Mahendra Rajbhar and invoking the legacy of Suheldev.
- Chaurasia Community: Traditionally seen as BJP voters, SP is attempting to break this trend by honoring Shivdayal Chaurasia.
- Thakur Community: By celebrating Maharana Pratap and surrounding himself with Kshatriya leaders, Akhilesh is attempting to fix the damage caused by controversial remarks from within SP.
Mirroring BJP’s Playbook
SP’s approach echoes BJP’s micro-caste outreach from 2014 onwards—celebrating sub-caste heroes, organizing community events, and wooing caste-based influencers like folk singers. The goal is clear: chip away at BJP’s stronghold by replicating its caste-specific mobilization tactics.
Eye on 2027
With the 2027 UP elections in sight, Akhilesh Yadav is laying the groundwork to expand beyond his traditional base. From Thakurs to Chaurasias, Rajbhars to Nonias, and beyond, SP’s aggressive social engineering is designed to build a broader, more inclusive vote base under the PDA umbrella.
