Air India has laid off over 1,000 employees.
Air India: Tata Group-owned airline Air India has fired more than 1,000 employees in the last three years for violating ethical rules.
The company's CEO and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, revealed this in a recent town hall meeting with employees. The dismissed employees faced serious allegations, including smuggling baggage onto aircraft, allowing passengers to carry excess baggage without paying, and abusing the Employee Leisure Travel (ELT) system.
Air India suffers losses worth crores.
CEO Wilson stressed that employees should behave properly even when no one is watching. He pointed out that hundreds of employees are fired each year for violating rules.
This action by Air India comes at a time when the company is under severe financial pressure. The Air India Group is projected to incur losses of over ₹22,000 crore in the 2026 financial year . Furthermore, the war in West Asia has led to a rise in the price of aviation turbine fuel (ATF). To offset this loss, the company is adopting measures such as freezing annual employee increments and reducing non-essential expenses.
Misuse of travel facility
Air India currently employs 24,000 people. Over 4,000 employees were investigated for misusing the company's Employee Leisure Travel system. Many were fined, and some were dismissed. Wilson stated that despite signing the Tata Code of Conduct, many employees are still not adhering to it, which will no longer be tolerated.
