AIIMS New Delhi has transferred AI-based mammography technology to BPL Technologies. This technology will help radiologists interpret mammography images and identify potential abnormalities.

AIIMS AI Mammography
To improve breast cancer detection, AIIMS New Delhi has transferred artificial intelligence (AI)-based mammography technology to BPL Technologies Limited. This technology was developed to help radiologists understand and interpret mammography images.
AIIMS transfers technology to BPL Technologies
This technology transfer between AIIMS New Delhi and BPL Technologies took place on September 16th. Professor Nikhil Tandon, Director of AIIMS New Delhi, and Ajay Jindal, CFO of BPL Technologies, were present. Senior officials and experts from AIIMS's research and radiology departments also attended the event.
This technology was developed by a team at AIIMS, consisting of experts in radiology and machine learning, and aims to provide technical assistance to radiologists in understanding mammography findings.
How will AI help in mammography?
Mammography is a key imaging test used for breast cancer screening. Images of the breast are taken, which are then examined by radiologists to identify any abnormalities or suspicious changes. AI technology developed at AIIMS will assist radiologists in this process. It can provide additional technical support in interpreting mammography images. This could be particularly beneficial in areas where the number of breast imaging specialists is limited.
However, this technology is not intended to replace doctors. AI will be used to assist radiologists in their decisions. The doctor will remain responsible for the final decisions regarding mammography results and patient treatment.
Not yet ready for direct patient use
The transfer of the technology to BPL Technologies does not mean that the AI technology will immediately be used in hospitals for patient diagnosis. Following the transfer, BPL Technologies will continue to work on the technology, including its development, validation in various conditions, and potential clinical use.
AIIMS's initiative to take research to hospitals
According to AIIMS, this technology transfer paves the way for transforming medical research into technologies used in real-life healthcare. AIIMS Director Professor Nikhil Tandon also emphasized the importance of connecting research conducted at academic institutions to real-life healthcare needs.
Help can be found in small towns and areas with a shortage of specialists.
In many areas of India, the availability of breast imaging specialists is limited. In such areas, if this AI technology proves suitable for clinical use after further testing and validation, it could provide additional assistance to radiologists in understanding mammography images.
