After the Rafale deal with France, a major deal will be struck with the EU, amid Trump's hawkish gaze on Europe.

Following the approval of the Rafale fighter jet manufacturing deal with France, India and the European Union (EU) are now set to sign a landmark Security and Defence Partnership Agreement. This agreement comes at a time when the US President's suspicious stance on Greenland has left Europe reeling.

Kaja Kallas, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Affairs, shared information about this agreement. In her address to the EU Parliament, Kallas stated that India is also ready for this agreement. Kallas, a former Prime Minister of Estonia, also serves as Vice President of the European Commission. Kallas told the EU Parliament that she is personally traveling to New Delhi to sign this agreement with India.

This year, the EU President and Commissioner will be the chief guests on Republic Day.

According to reports, agreements between India and the EU are primarily going to be signed in the areas of maritime, cyber, and counter-terrorism. European Union President Antonio Costa and Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen will be the chief guests at this year's Republic Day parade (January 26, 2026). A high-level EU delegation is accompanying them to Delhi. A contingent of EU naval personnel will also march past in the Republic Day parade held on the Line of Duty.

The EU's defense and security agreement with India is very special.

In fact, the US and European countries are locked in a fierce dispute, first over Ukraine and now over the occupation of Greenland. US President Donald Trump is determined to make Greenland a part of the US at any cost. European countries are deeply upset with Trump for his leniency toward Russia in the Ukraine war. Now, the EU is worried about the occupation of Greenland, a sovereign state of NATO member Denmark. In such a situation, the EU's defense and security agreement with India becomes extremely important.

There is no information from India regarding the agreement yet.

Although not much information has been shared by India regarding this agreement, in recent times India has indicated to make big defence deals with important European countries like France and Germany.

Meanwhile, last week, India's Defense Ministry gave the Air Force the green light to a joint purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets with France. Under this deal, the French company Dassault will manufacture 114 Rafale fighter jets in India. Prior to this, important discussions were held with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who was visiting India, regarding the joint construction of submarines for the Navy.
