After IndiGo's massive crisis, find out who will now oversee its operations 24/7.
IndiGo Airline Disruptions: Following the major operational crisis faced by the country's largest domestic airline, IndiGo, earlier this month, the matter has now come under regulatory scrutiny. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) clarified on Thursday that it has decided to proceed with the investigation against IndiGo under competition laws.
Now CCI is keeping a close watch.
In fact, since the beginning of December, IndiGo has canceled hundreds of flights, causing significant inconvenience to thousands of passengers across the country and creating chaos at airports. The CCI said in a statement that it had received complaints against IndiGo regarding flight disruptions on various routes in the aviation sector. After a preliminary assessment, it was found that the matter required further investigation.
It's worth noting that IndiGo holds over 65% of the domestic aviation market, so disruptions to its operations directly impact passengers and the entire sector. This has led to questions in some quarters about whether IndiGo's strong market position has given rise to competition issues.
DGCA is investigating
Meanwhile, the aviation safety regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is also conducting a separate investigation into the flight disruptions and the airline's operational management. Meanwhile, IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers has assured employees and passengers that the company is over the worst of the crisis and is now focused on strengthening operations, reviewing the root causes of the crisis, and moving forward with confidence.
However, regulatory pressure on IndiGo will continue until the results of the CCI and DGCA investigations are out, and it will be important to see whether these flight cancellations will be considered merely operational lapses or whether any strict action will be taken from the perspective of violation of competition laws as well.
