A1 and A2 milk
A1 vs A1 Milk: Milk is considered an integral part of the Indian diet. From morning tea to children's breakfast to light dinner, milk is used in almost every household. However, in the last few years, the debate over A1 and A2 milk has intensified. A2 milk is being marketed as healthier and more easily digestible, while many people consider this merely a marketing trend. Consequently, the biggest question on people's minds is the difference between A1 and A2 milk, and which milk is considered better for health.
What is A1 and A2 milk?
Casein protein comprises approximately 80 percent of the total protein in milk. Beta-casein is the most prevalent type. Among the different types of beta-casein, A1 and A2 are the most discussed. A1 milk contains the A1 type of beta-casein, while A2 milk contains the A2 type of beta-casein. Scientists believe that these two proteins differ by only one amino acid, yet their effects on the body are different.
Which cow gives A1 and A2?
The type of milk depends largely on the breed of cow. Milk from Indian indigenous cows, such as the Gir, Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, and Tharparkar breeds, is generally considered A2. Holstein, Friesian, and some European breeds produce A1 milk. Many packaged milks available in the market may contain both A1 and A2 proteins, while A2 milk contains only A2 beta casein.
How does it affect digestion?
The most debated topic regarding A1 and A2 milk is digestion. Research has shown that when A1 milk is digested, a peptide called BCM-7, or beta-cassette morphine-7, is formed in the body. Some scientists link this to stomach-related problems. Experts say that some people may experience gas, bloating, and stomach upset after drinking A1 milk. Meanwhile, A2 milk produces very little or no BCM-7 during digestion, making it considered milder on the stomach.
Is A2 milk healthier?
There are claims that the A2 group may be more beneficial to the body. Some research has linked it to better digestion, fewer stomach problems, and overall gut health. However, experts also clarify that there is no concrete scientific evidence yet to conclusively prove that A2 milk is better than A1 milk for every individual.
