Is the new Covid variant affecting children more?
Is BA.3.2 Dangerous For Children: Is the new COVID variant posing a greater threat to children? The rapidly spreading COVID variant, called "Cicada," in the United States has raised concerns among health experts. According to initial reports, this variant is particularly affecting children, although its symptoms are currently being reported as similar to the previous variant. Let us explain.
Rapidly spreading new variant
This new variant, known as BA.3.2, has been tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in several states. Reports indicate that this variant has spread to 25 US states and 23 countries. However, hospitalizations are currently declining. Scientists believe this variant is related to the BA.3 subvariant of Omicron, which first emerged in 2022. It is believed that this virus persisted for a long time in the body of someone with a weakened immune system and gradually evolved into a new form through mutation.
Category under monitoring
The World Health Organization has classified this variant as a variant under monitoring, meaning it is currently being monitored but has not been declared extremely dangerous. Most alarmingly, BA.3.2 appears to infect children more. According to data from New York, children aged 3 to 15 are affected by this variant at a rate nearly five times higher. However, its share of total cases remains limited.
What are the symptoms?
Regarding symptoms, no new changes have been observed. Common COVID symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, and difficulty breathing are still being reported. Loss of taste and smell is now being reported in fewer cases. Experts say that while the current vaccine may not be fully effective against this variant, it still helps prevent severe disease. Furthermore, existing antiviral medications are also considered effective.
Impact on Indian children
Now the question arises: are Indian children safe? Currently, there is no confirmed widespread spread of this variant in India, but given the global trend, it's important to remain vigilant. Doctors recommend taking measures such as maintaining children's immunity, maintaining good hygiene, and avoiding crowded places. Additionally, it's important to consult a doctor about a booster dose if needed.
