Oil marketing companies are evaluating a lightweight composite LPG cylinder designed for commercial users who need a more portable alternative
India's state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) are considering the introduction of a 10-kg composite LPG cylinder for commercial consumers, a move that could provide a practical solution for small businesses, street vendors, cafés, and other users who find traditional commercial cylinders too bulky.
If approved, the proposed cylinder would bridge the gap between the existing 5-kg and 19-kg commercial LPG cylinders, offering greater portability while maintaining sufficient cooking fuel for businesses with moderate daily consumption.
The proposal is currently under evaluation, and authorities have not yet announced a launch date.
A New Commercial LPG Option Under Consideration
According to industry reports, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) are examining the feasibility of introducing 10-kg composite cylinders for commercial use.
The lightweight cylinder is expected to serve businesses that require more LPG than a 5-kg cylinder can provide but do not need the capacity of a standard 19-kg commercial cylinder.
If the plan moves forward, the cylinders are expected to be priced under commercial LPG rates.
Who Could Benefit?
The proposed 10-kg cylinder is aimed at consumers who require mobility, easy handling, and limited storage space.
Potential beneficiaries include:
- Small restaurants and cafés
- Tea stalls and food kiosks
- Street food vendors
- Small commercial kitchens
- Students and paying guests
- Tenants in rented accommodation
- Migrant workers
- Users operating from compact business spaces
For many of these users, transporting or storing a heavy 19-kg commercial cylinder can be inconvenient.
Lightweight Composite Technology
Unlike conventional steel cylinders, the proposed model would use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composite technology, making it significantly lighter.
Industry sources indicate that the cylinder could weigh nearly 50% less than a traditional steel LPG cylinder, making it easier to:
- Carry by hand
- Transport between locations
- Move upstairs without much effort
- Handle in compact commercial spaces
The lighter design may particularly benefit businesses that frequently relocate or operate from temporary locations.
Transparent Body Helps Monitor Gas Levels
One of the standout features of composite LPG cylinders is their translucent outer body.
Unlike steel cylinders, users can visually check how much LPG remains inside without relying on external gauges or estimating consumption.
This feature could help businesses plan timely refills and reduce the chances of unexpectedly running out of cooking gas during working hours.
Composite Cylinders Are Already Available for Domestic Consumers
Composite LPG cylinders are not entirely new in India.
Public sector oil companies already market similar lightweight cylinders for household users under different brand names, including:
- Indane Xtralight by IndianOil
- HP Gas Ojas by HPCL
- Bharatgas Lite by BPCL
The latest proposal focuses on extending this technology to commercial customers through a dedicated 10-kg variant.
Current Commercial LPG Prices
If introduced, the pricing of the new cylinder will play an important role in determining its popularity.
At present, LPG prices in Delhi are approximately:
| Cylinder Type | Current Price |
|---|---|
| 14.2-kg Domestic LPG | ₹942 |
| 19-kg Commercial LPG | ₹2,930 |
| 5-kg Commercial LPG | ₹808.50 |
The proposed 10-kg cylinder is expected to follow the commercial LPG pricing structure, although its final price has not yet been announced.
Distribution Yet to Be Finalised
Sources indicate that, if approved, the cylinders could be supplied through the existing LPG distributor network as well as selected retail outlets.
A wider distribution network would improve accessibility for small businesses and mobile vendors who require frequent LPG refills.
However, the final distribution model is still under discussion.
Launch Timeline Still Unclear
Oil marketing companies have not confirmed when the new cylinder could be introduced.
Officials have indicated that several factors remain under evaluation, including:
- Market demand
- Safety certification
- Regulatory approvals
- Manufacturing capacity
- Distribution logistics
A final decision is expected only after these assessments are completed.
Demand for Portable LPG Solutions Continues to Grow
The proposal reflects the growing need for compact, lightweight LPG solutions among India's expanding network of small businesses and mobile entrepreneurs.
If approved, the 10-kg composite commercial cylinder could provide a practical middle-ground option for users seeking greater portability without compromising significantly on fuel capacity. Until an official announcement is made, however, the proposal remains under evaluation by the country's leading public sector oil companies.
