The battle for the fourth spot in the IPL playoffs

The IPL 2026 playoff schedule is almost complete. Three teams have already qualified for the playoffs, and the fourth team will be revealed in the next two days. However, a fierce battle is raging to become the fourth team to qualify. Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders are the four teams still in contention for a playoff spot.

The first qualifier match will be played between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans, as both teams finished in the top two of the points table. Third-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad have advanced to the eliminator. The playoff stage begins on May 26th, with the final scheduled for May 31st. Only three matches remain in the league stage, but what is the equation for that fourth spot, and who has the easiest path to the playoffs? Understand the full playoff equation here.

Rajasthan Royals

Rajasthan Royals' path to the playoffs is the easiest and least challenging. Rajasthan simply needs to win against the Mumbai Indians on May 24th, even if it's by just one run. RR will secure a playoff berth simply by defeating Mumbai, as they will have 16 points. Of the four teams in the playoff race, only Rajasthan can reach 16 points.

Even if they lose to MI, Rajasthan won't be eliminated. In the event of a defeat, Rajasthan will have to hope that the Lucknow Supergiants defeat the Punjab Kings. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals should win against KKR, but it shouldn't be so big that their net run rate exceeds Rajasthan's.

Punjab Kings

The first task for the Punjab Kings is to defeat the Lucknow Super Giants by a big margin. After that, Shreyas Iyer and his team will have to hope that the Rajasthan Royals lose their last league stage match. Even this will not guarantee Punjab a playoff spot, as they will also have to pray for a Delhi Capitals victory over KKR.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders first need a big win against Delhi Capitals to reach 15 points. Punjab can also reach 15 points by defeating Lucknow , but KKR will have to hope that their net run rate is better than Punjab's if the points are tied. A Rajasthan Royals defeat at the hands of the Mumbai Indians will also be crucial for Kolkata.
