Weather Update: The southwest monsoon has become active across several parts of northern India, and the India Meteorological Department has forecast another spell of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in the national capital and surrounding areas. An orange alert has been issued for the region, urging residents to remain cautious as adverse weather conditions may affect daily life and travel.
According to the latest forecast, light to moderate showers may begin during the morning, with rainfall expected to intensify as the day progresses. Several parts of the city could experience moderate to heavy rain, especially during the afternoon, evening, and night hours.
Heavy Rainfall Likely Across Several Areas
The weather department has predicted widespread cloud cover along with intermittent spells of rain throughout the day. Localized heavy showers may lead to temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect normal traffic movement.
Residents are advised to keep track of weather updates before stepping out and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Expected
Along with rainfall, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h, with stronger gusts possible in some locations. These weather conditions may reduce visibility and increase the risk of falling tree branches or temporary disruptions.
Authorities have advised commuters to remain alert while driving and to avoid standing near weak structures, electricity poles, or large trees during thunderstorms.
Rain May Bring Relief From Humid Weather
The expected rainfall is likely to provide welcome relief from the recent spell of heat and humidity experienced across the region.
Daytime temperatures are expected to remain relatively pleasant, with the maximum temperature likely to be around 35°C, while the minimum temperature may stay below recent levels because of persistent cloud cover and rainfall.
Traffic Disruptions and Waterlogging Possible
Heavy rainfall during peak commuting hours may cause:
- Waterlogging in low-lying areas
- Traffic congestion on major roads
- Reduced visibility for motorists
- Delays in public transport services
People planning to travel are advised to leave early, carry rain protection such as umbrellas or raincoats, and allow extra travel time.
Rainy Spell Likely to Continue
The IMD has indicated that active monsoon conditions are expected to continue over the next few days.
Intermittent rainfall, cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and occasional gusty winds are likely to persist across Delhi-NCR, helping keep temperatures relatively comfortable while increasing the possibility of weather-related disruptions.
IMD's Safety Advisory
The weather department has issued several precautionary recommendations for residents:
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms whenever possible.
- Avoid sheltering under trees, electric poles, or unstable structures.
- Do not attempt to cross waterlogged roads or flooded underpasses.
- Keep electronic devices protected from rain and lightning.
- Follow official weather advisories before travelling.
Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant, as weather conditions can change rapidly during active monsoon spells. Staying informed through official IMD updates and taking basic safety precautions can help minimize risks associated with heavy rain and thunderstorms.
