Air India reduces fuel surcharge on international flights.

Air India: In response to the continued decline in international crude oil prices, Air India has taken a significant decision. The airline has reduced fuel surcharges on flights to North America, Australia, Europe, and the United Kingdom. This is expected to provide significant relief to passengers.

When and why was the fuel surcharge implemented?

The company implemented the fuel surcharge on April 7th, when tensions in West Asia were at their peak due to the US-Iran war. At that time, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz had affected the global supply of crude oil. Consequently, the airline's operating expenses increased significantly due to increased fuel costs and airspace restrictions. Consequently, the Air India Group announced a fuel surcharge ranging from US$24 to US$280 on most of its international routes. Consequently, domestic passengers were charged an additional fee ranging from US$299 to US$899, depending on the route.

How much has the fuel surcharge been reduced?

According to a report by news agency PTI, the fuel surcharge for flights to North America and Australia has been reduced from US$280 to US$200 per ticket. Similarly, the surcharge for flights to Europe and the UK has been reduced from US$205 to US$125. The new rates came into effect on July 1. However, the company has not yet made any changes to the fuel surcharge for other international routes or domestic flights.

Will the rent be cheaper?

Air India's decision to reduce fuel surcharges is expected to reduce ticket prices on long-haul international flights. Economy and business class tickets could see a reduction of ₹1,500 to ₹4,500 ($18 to $55) per ticket. This decision could have an immediate impact on flights from India to the US, UK, Europe, Australia, and Canada.

What is fuel surcharge?

Fuel surcharge is an additional fee levied on the base fare of an air ticket, directly linked to crude oil prices. Rising international crude oil prices make air turbine fuel (ATF) more expensive, leading airlines to increase the fuel surcharge to offset this increased burden on operating costs. Currently, with crude oil prices hovering around $72 per barrel, the fuel surcharge has been reduced.
