Trade, tech and terror... Every issue was discussed between India and America, but Russia-Ukraine was not mentioned

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a two-day visit to America recently. During this he met many eminent personalities. He also met President Donald Trump and many important issues were discussed but the issue of Russia and Ukraine has been left behind. 

India America Joint Statement: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump said in a joint statement that the India-US partnership is very important to keep the Indo-Pacific region free and open. However, there was no mention of the Russia-Ukraine war in this statement, whereas this issue was emphasized during the Biden administration. During this, Modi and Trump discussed business-related issues, especially the effects of China's industrial policies. Both leaders directed to reach a balanced trade agreement by the end of this year.

 

The joint statement also said that the two countries will strengthen law enforcement cooperation to take strong action against illegal immigration, organized crime, drug, terrorism, human and arms trafficking. India sees this as a way to stop the activities of Khalistani separatists in America. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that this is important for India.

 

The Trump administration supported initiatives such as IMEEC and iCET, with iCET renamed TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology). The initiative will promote cooperation on technologies such as defense, AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing.

There was no direct comment on the conflict in West Asia, but both countries agreed to increase investment there and strengthen cooperation. Under the Indo-Pacific cooperation, the Quad countries (India, US, Japan, Australia) reiterated support for international law, maritime security and freedom of trade.

PM Modi will soon host the summit of Quad leaders in New Delhi. Apart from this, India and the US launched the Indian Ocean Strategic Venture, which will promote economic and trade cooperation. In the field of nuclear energy, India and the US welcomed proposals to amend Indian nuclear laws, which will make it possible to build large reactors with US design and cooperate on small modular reactors.

 

Terrorism was also discussed

Taking a tough stand on terrorism, Modi and Trump condemned terrorist organisations like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), ISIS and Al-Qaeda. The US announced the extradition of Mumbai attack accused Tahawwur Rana and both the leaders appealed to Pakistan to punish the culprits of 26/11 and Pathankot attacks soon and not to promote terrorism.
