BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman

Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( BNP ) acting president Tarique Rahman arrived in Dhaka from Britain on Thursday ( December 25, 2025 ) after 17 years. His return comes at a time when a new wave of unrest and political instability has gripped Bangladesh following the assassination of hardliner Sharif Osman Hadi. Upon arriving in Bangladesh, Rahman spoke with Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus and thanked him for arranging security arrangements.

Let us unite and build the nation: Tariq Rahman.

Addressing a rally in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman said the people of Bangladesh want to regain their right to freedom of speech and their democratic structure. He recalled the 1971 war, the 1975 military and civilian uprisings, and the mass movements of the 1990s. Tarique Rahman said the time has come for everyone to unite and build the nation. He repeatedly emphasized in his speech that he wants peace in Bangladesh.

What did Tariq Rahman say on the murder of Usman Hadi?

According to the Dhaka Tribune report, Tarique Rahman said, "Bangladesh is a country where Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians all live equally. We want to build a safe Bangladesh. A country where any woman, man, or child can leave home safely and return safely."

Referring to the assassination of Osman Hadi, Tariq said, "He wanted the people of the country to get their economic rights back." He added, "To avenge the blood of those martyred in 1971 and 2024, we must build the Bangladesh they envisioned."

Rahman is busy increasing the influence of BNP.

Jamaat-e-Islami and its Islamist allies, which were allies of the BNP during its tenure (from 2001 to 2006), now appear to be its main rivals after the interim government dissolved the Awami League through an executive order under the country's stringent anti-terrorism law. Tarique Rahman's return to Bangladesh is also considered significant as Jamaat-e-Islami seeks to expand its influence in the country's fragmented political landscape.
