Young Working Adults Lifestyle : A study has revealed that when young adults start their professional life, they start lacking physical activity and sleep, which is very important for their health.

The joy of the first job fills young adults with excitement, energy and dedication, but at the same time they start being careless about their health. According to a study done by scientists at Cambridge University, when young adults start a job, their physical activity first increases and then decreases significantly. Young adults who increase physical activity are in jobs such as bus driving, hairdressing, cleaning, waiting or technical work. In contrast, people who do managerial or professional jobs do not engage in physical activity.
Lack of physical activity seen among WFH workers
Those working from home had the greatest reduction in physical activity, although there was no change in their sleep time. Alaina Oxenham, from the MRC Epidemiology Unit, said: "If we want to stay healthy throughout our lives, it's important to remember that being active helps us achieve this goal." She suggested those working from home should consider incorporating physical activity into their day, such as going for a walk before or after work or during a lunch break.
Physical activity increases when you start working
For this study, researchers analysed data from more than 3,000 UK participants who started working for the first time between 2015 and 2023. The results of the study, which were published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, showed that when people start work, their physical activity increases by an average of about 28 minutes per day, which is equivalent to moderate activity (such as cycling). However, this decreases by about seven minutes per day every year. The biggest change was seen in men, where their physical activity increased by an average of 45 minutes per day, while in women this increase was about 16 minutes.
Decreased sleep
Young adults' nightly sleep time also decreased by about 10 minutes immediately, the researchers reported. The researchers urged workplaces to promote health-motivated initiatives such as healthy diet, physical activity and sleep among young adults to lead to "healthier employees and fewer sick days."
